Scrapy: Arbitrary Module Import via Referrer-Policy Header in RefererMiddleware

Scrapy is a high-level web crawling and scraping framework for Python. From 1.4.0 until 2.14.2, RefererMiddleware in scrapy/spidermiddlewares/referer.py treated a Referrer-Policy response-header value that resembled a Python import path as a referrer policy class, imported the referenced object, and called it. A malicious website could supply a callable such as sys.exit and terminate a crawler processing the response. This issue is fixed in version 2.14.2.

Scrapy: S3DownloadHandler sends signed S3 requests over plaintext HTTP by default

Scrapy is a high-level web crawling and scraping framework for Python. Prior to 2.17.0, in scrapy/core/downloader/handlers/s3.py, Scrapy's S3DownloadHandler converts an S3-scheme bucket and key request into a plaintext HTTP request to the corresponding S3 endpoint unless request.meta["is_secure"] is explicitly enabled, then signs and sends the plaintext request with configured AWS credentials. A network attacker who can observe traffic between Scrapy and S3 can read the bucket and key path, AWS Authorization header, X-Amz-Security-Token when temporary credentials are used, S3 object contents, and S3 response headers. Brotli decompression bomb DoS in scrapy/scrapy

Scrapy versions up to 2.13.2 are vulnerable to a denial of service (DoS) attack due to a flaw in its brotli decompression implementation. The protection mechanism against decompression bombs fails to mitigate the brotli variant, allowing remote servers to crash clients with less than 80GB of available memory. This occurs because brotli can achieve extremely high compression ratios for zero-filled data, leading to excessive memory consumption during decompression.

Authorization Header Leakage in scrapy/scrapy on Scheme Change Redirects

In scrapy/scrapy, an issue was identified where the Authorization header is not removed during redirects that only change the scheme (e.g., HTTPS to HTTP) but remain within the same domain. This behavior contravenes the Fetch standard, which mandates the removal of Authorization headers in cross-origin requests when the scheme, host, or port changes. Consequently, when a redirect downgrades from HTTPS to HTTP, the Authorization header may be inadvertently exposed in plaintext, leading to potential sensitive information disclosure to unauthorized actors. The flaw is located in the _build_redirect_request function of the redirect middleware.

Scrapy allows redirect following in protocols other than HTTP

    ### Impact Scrapy was following redirects regardless of the URL protocol, so redirects were working for `data://`, `file://`, `ftp://`, `s3://`, and any other scheme defined in the `DOWNLOAD_HANDLERS` setting. However, HTTP redirects should only work between URLs that use the `http://` or `https://` schemes. A malicious actor, given write access to the start requests (e.g. ability to define `start_urls`) of a spider and read access to the spider output, could exploit this vulnerability to: - Redirect to any local file using the `file://` scheme to read its contents. - Redirect to an `ftp://` URL of a malicious FTP server to obtain the FTP

Scrapy's redirects ignoring scheme-specific proxy settings

    ### Impact When using system proxy settings, which are scheme-specific (i.e. specific to `http://` or `https://` URLs), Scrapy was not accounting for scheme changes during redirects. For example, an HTTP request would use the proxy configured for HTTP and, when redirected to an HTTPS URL, the new HTTPS request would still use the proxy configured for HTTP instead of switching to the proxy configured for HTTPS. Same the other way around. If you have different proxy configurations for HTTP and HTTPS in your system for security reasons (e.g., maybe you don’t want one of your proxy providers to be aware of the URLs that you visit with the othe

Authorization Header Leak During Cross-Domain Redirect in scrapy/scrapy

In scrapy version 2.10.1, an issue was identified where the Authorization header, containing credentials for server authentication, is leaked to a third-party site during a cross-domain redirect. This vulnerability arises from the failure to remove the Authorization header when redirecting across domains. The exposure of the Authorization header to unauthorized actors could potentially allow for account hijacking.

XML External Entity (XXE) Vulnerability in scrapy/scrapy

The scrapy/scrapy project is vulnerable to XML External Entity (XXE) attacks due to the use of lxml.etree.fromstring for parsing untrusted XML data without proper validation. This vulnerability allows attackers to perform denial of service attacks, access local files, generate network connections, or circumvent firewalls by submitting specially crafted XML data.

    ReDoS Vulnerability in scrapy/scrapy's XMLFeedSpider

A Regular Expression Denial of Service (ReDoS) vulnerability exists in the XMLFeedSpider class of the scrapy/scrapy project, specifically in the parsing of XML content. By crafting malicious XML content that exploits inefficient regular expression complexity used in the parsing process, an attacker can cause a denial-of-service (DoS) condition. This vulnerability allows for the system to hang and consume significant resources, potentially rendering services that utilize Scrapy for XML processing unresponsive.

Scrapy before 2.6.2 and 1.8.3 vulnerable to one proxy sending credentials to another

    ### Impact When the [built-in HTTP proxy downloader middleware](https://docs.scrapy.org/en/2.6/topics/downloader-middleware.html#module-scrapy.downloadermiddlewares.httpproxy) processes a request with `proxy` metadata, and that `proxy` metadata includes proxy credentials, the built-in HTTP proxy downloader middleware sets the `Proxy-Authentication` header, but only if that header is not already set. There are third-party proxy-rotation downloader middlewares that set different `proxy` metadata every time they process a request. Because of request retries and redirects, the same request can be processed by downloader middlewares more than o

Scrapy cookie-setting is not restricted based on the public suffix list

    ### Impact Responses from domain names whose public domain name suffix contains 1 or more periods (e.g. responses from `example.co.uk`, given its public domain name suffix is `co.uk`) are able to set cookies that are included in requests to any other domain sharing the same domain name suffix. ### Patches Upgrade to Scrapy 2.6.0, which restricts cookies with their domain set to any of those in the [public suffix list](https://publicsuffix.org/). If you are using Scrapy 1.8 or a lower version, and upgrading to Scrapy 2.6.0 is not an option, you may upgrade to Scrapy 1.8.2 instead. ### Workarounds The only workaround for unpatched version

HTTP authentication credential leak to target websites in scrapy

Scrapy is a high-level web crawling and scraping framework for Python. If you use `HttpAuthMiddleware` (i.e. the `http_user` and `http_pass` spider attributes) for HTTP authentication, all requests will expose your credentials to the request target. This includes requests generated by Scrapy components, such as `robots.txt` requests sent by Scrapy when the `ROBOTSTXT_OBEY` setting is set to `True`, or as requests reached through redirects. Upgrade to Scrapy 2.5.1 and use the new `http_auth_domain` spider attribute to control which domains are allowed to receive the configured HTTP authentication credentials. CVE-2017-14158

Scrapy 1.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via large files because arbitrarily many files are read into memory, which is especially problematic if the files are then individually written in a separate thread to a slow storage resource, as demonstrated by interaction between dataReceived (in core/downloader/handlers/http11.py) and S3FilesStore.
