phpMyFAQ has SQL Injection in `StopWords::add()` — Unescaped Stop Word Insertion

phpMyFAQ is an open source FAQ web application. The `StopWords::add()` method inversions prior to 4.1.6 builds a SQL `INSERT` statement using `sprintf()` and inserts the user-supplied stop word value directly into the query string without calling the application's database escaping function on it. A sibling method, `StopWords::update()`, which modifies an existing stop word, correctly escapes the same kind of input. The omission is isolated to the `add()` (insert) code path. An authenticated administrator who can reach the stop-word management feature can submit a crafted value as the "word" parameter that breaks out of the SQL string literal

phpMyFAQ's two-factor authentication login bypasses the password factor

phpMyFAQ is an open source FAQ web application. Versions 3.2.0 through 4.1.5 contain an authentication bypass in its public two-factor authentication verification flow: an unauthenticated attacker can submit an account’s numeric user ID and a valid or brute-forced six-digit TOTP code without first authenticating with the account password, allowing takeover of any 2FA-enabled account, including administrator accounts. Version 4.1.6 is patched by binding TOTP verification to a session established after successful password authentication and limiting failed TOTP attempts. No official workaround is documented; affected installations should upgrad

phpMyFAQ has Stored XSS in Admin FAQ Editor via HTML Entity Bypass in Frontend FAQ Submission

phpMyFAQ is an open source FAQ web application. A stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions prior to 4.2.0-alpha allows any unauthenticated user (or low-privileged registered user) to inject arbitrary JavaScript that executes in an administrator's browser when they review or edit a user-submitted FAQ entry. This leads to admin account takeover via session theft. The vulnerability exists because `html_entity_decode()` converts HTML entities into executable HTML after `strip_tags()` has already passed them through, and the admin template renders the content with Twig's `|raw` filter without any output sanitization. phpMyFAQ - Information Disclosure of Inactive FAQ Content via Public API Endpoints

phpMyFAQ before 4.1.5 applies inconsistent active=yes and publication-date filtering across its public FAQ API endpoints, allowing unauthenticated attackers to retrieve inactive (draft or review-only) FAQ content. Specifically, GET /api/v3.1/faq/{categoryId}/{faqId} returns the inactive FAQ title and full answer, while GET /api/v3.1/faqs/tags/{tagId} and GET /api/v4.0/faqs/tags/{tagId} return the inactive FAQ title and answer preview, disclosing non-public content.

phpMyFAQ - Authenticated Path Traversal in PDF Export via concatenatePaths Function

phpMyFAQ before 4.1.5 contains a potential authenticated path traversal vulnerability in the concatenatePaths() function within src/phpMyFAQ/Export/Pdf/Wrapper.php. A user with FAQ editing privileges can store HTML containing crafted image paths that are processed during PDF generation. The path resolution logic locates the substring "content" within a user-controlled path using strpos(); when "content" is absent, strpos() returns false, which becomes 0 when cast to an integer, preserving the entire attacker-controlled path. This path is later passed to file_get_contents() without canonicalization or root-directory containment validation, whi

phpMyFAQ - Privilege Escalation via Missing Self-Rights Constraint in GroupController::updatePermissions

phpMyFAQ before 4.1.5 contains a privilege escalation vulnerability in GroupController::updatePermissions that allows GROUP_EDIT administrators to grant arbitrary rights to groups without verifying they hold those rights themselves. A delegated administrator can exploit this by assigning high-value permissions to a group they belong to, inheriting those rights and escalating privileges up to full administrative control.

phpMyFAQ - Privilege Escalation via Missing Authorization in editUser() and updateUserRights()

phpMyFAQ before 4.1.4 contains missing authorization vulnerabilities in editUser() and updateUserRights() endpoints that allow authenticated administrators to escalate privileges. Non-SuperAdmin users with edit_user permission can set is_superadmin flag or grant arbitrary rights to escalate to SuperAdmin access.

phpMyFAQ: Missing userHasPermission() in 4 API write endpoints (CVE-2026-24421 Incomplete Fix)

phpMyFAQ is an open source FAQ web application. Versions prior to 4.1.4 have Missing Authorization in the API CategoryController. CVE-2026-24421 addressed this in the BackupController by adding: $this->userHasPermission(PermissionType::BACKUP). The same fix was not applied to 4 other write endpoints in the public API. All 4 only call $this->hasValidToken() — which checks a shared API key header, rather than the individual user's role permissions. The following APIs are affected: POST /api/v4.0/category (CategoryController::create), POST /api/v4.0/faq (FaqController::create), PUT /api/v4.0/faq (FaqController::update), and POST /api/v4.0/quest

phpMyFAQ has Weak Cryptography - SHA1 for Password Hashing

phpMyFAQ is an open source FAQ web application. Prior to version 4.1.4, attachment passwords are hashed using SHA-1, a cryptographically broken algorithm. SHA-1 has been vulnerable to collision attacks since 2017 (SHAttered). Version 4.1.4 fixes the issue.

phpMyFAQ - Unauthenticated Password Reset via User Password Update Endpoint

phpMyFAQ before 4.1.3 contains an unauthenticated password reset vulnerability in the user password update API endpoint that allows attackers to change account passwords without token validation. Attackers can enumerate valid username and email pairs and force immediate password changes by sending PUT requests to the /api/index.php/user/password/update endpoint, causing account disruption and invalidating legitimate user credentials.

phpMyFAQ - Authentication Bypass via Missing Password Reset Token in /api/user/password/update

phpMyFAQ before 4.1.3 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability in the password reset endpoint that allows unauthenticated attackers to reset any user account password without token verification or email confirmation. Attackers can enumerate valid usernames, obtain plaintext passwords via email, and achieve complete account takeover including administrative access.

phpMyFAQ - Authentication Bypass via Empty API Token

phpMyFAQ before 4.1.3 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability in API v4.0 where the default empty api.apiClientToken allows unauthenticated users to create and modify FAQ entries. Attackers can send an empty x-pmf-token header to bypass token validation and inject malicious content via POST endpoints /api/v4.0/faq/create, /api/v4.0/category, and /api/v4.0/question.

phpMyFAQ - Insecure Direct Object Reference in User Password API

phpMyFAQ before 4.1.3 contains an insecure direct object reference vulnerability in the admin API user password endpoint that allows authenticated administrators to change any user's password without authorization verification. An attacker with low-privilege admin credentials can escalate to SuperAdmin by modifying the userId parameter in the overwrite-password API request.
